Paphiopedilum Mad Wine (Madela x JoAnne's Wine) was one of our earliest attempts at novelty hybridizing, and we were thrilled with the resultant flowers. Paph. Madela (Maudiae x delenatii) was the capsule parent, and a very high quality vinicolored JoAnne's Wine was the pollen parent. Only a few flasks were produced from the capsule. This grex segregated into two 'types' of flowers. About ¾ were deeply and evenly (and unusually) colored like the example pictured here, and ¼ a soft pink flower, both with puffy shape and very full petals. Several AOS awards have been granted to this grex.
